Terms of use

The rules for an Off The Cloud account and the bridge at off-the.cloud. Version 2026-10-04, last updated 4 October 2026.

In short. Your device and everything on it are yours, and so is the responsibility for them: keep your own backups. Off The Cloud is free open-source software, provided as it is. We are not responsible for lost or damaged data, or for problems caused by how the device is handled, set up or looked after. Off The Cloud can be used for free, and a bridge account is free for its first two years. After that the bridge costs 9.99 euros + VAT a year, and we email you before then.

Who we are

The bridge and the accounts are run by Off The Cloud, reachable at info@off-the.cloud or through the contact form. How we handle your personal data is in the privacy notice.

What these terms cover

These terms cover your account and the bridge: the service that gives your device a name (like casa.off-the.cloud), passes connections from the apps and from your friends' devices to it, sends its notifications, and helps set it up.

The Off The Cloud software itself, for the device, the web app, the phone and computer apps, and the bridge, is open source under the GNU AGPL v3. That licence, not these terms, governs the software, and it comes without any warranty. A device used only at home or through Tailscale Funnel needs no account and does not use the bridge.

Your account

Price

Off The Cloud can be used for free. A bridge account is free for the first two years after it is created. After that, the bridge costs 9.99 euros + VAT a year. We email you before the free period ends, with how to pay. If you don't pay, your device names are released; your device keeps working at home and through Tailscale Funnel.

Your device and your data

The device runs in your home, on hardware you chose and look after: the Raspberry Pi, its SD card and disks, power and network. You decide what is stored on it, who can reach it, and what it syncs with. That means:

We are not responsible for any loss, damage, corruption or disclosure of data on your device or synced with it, or for any harm caused by how the device or the software is installed, configured, handled, powered, modified, repaired or looked after. That includes hardware faults, SD cards and disks wearing out, power cuts, updates interrupted by unplugging, and lost passwords.

The bridge

We run the bridge with care and keep it secure, but it is provided as it is, without a guarantee that it is always available or free of faults. It may be down for maintenance or for reasons outside our control, and we may change it. If we ever stop running it, we tell account holders by email at least 30 days before, where we can. Your device keeps working at home without it.

Acceptable use

Don't use your account or the bridge to break the law, infringe others' rights, or harm others. In particular, don't:

We may suspend or remove an account or a device name that does, and tell you why unless the law prevents it.

Liability

As far as the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, such as lost data, lost profits or the cost of recovering data. Our total liability to you is limited to what you paid us for the bridge in the 12 months before the event. Nothing in these terms limits liability for intent or gross negligence, or any right you have as a consumer that the law does not allow to be limited.

Changes

If these terms change in a way that matters, we email account holders before the change applies, and ask you to accept the new version on your account page before setting up another device. If you don't agree, you can delete your account.

Law

These terms are governed by Dutch law, and disputes go to the competent court in the Netherlands. If you live elsewhere in the EU, you keep the protection of your own country's mandatory consumer law, and can also go to the courts where you live.
